Who
David Grosse

David Grosse has spent 30 years working in international banking organizations, in senior operational, risk management and audit roles. His own experience, together with the fallout from the Global Financial Crisis, multiple banking scandals and an ongoing diet of risk, resilience and conduct issues, convinced him that the industry needed to rethink it’s approach to understanding humans and behavioural risk. To develop these ideas he formed a behavioural risk team within HSBC Global Banking and Markets, went back to college to study behavioural science and reached out to all those within banks, regulators, academia and industry bodies who were developing capability, expertise and interest. Building on this work David founded behavOR in 2022, to provide independent behavioural risk consulting services and to help the industry move forward. Working with the behavioural “coalition of the willing” he continues to encourage the financial services industry to adopt a more scientifically informed approach to human risk. This reset is important to both individual institutions and to wider systemic risk. In addition to his behavioural risk and conduct work within HSBC, David was also the Global Head of Operational Risk, Asia Pacific Head of Internal Audit, and Hong Kong Chief Operating Officer at Barclays Capital; and the Asia Pacific Chief Operating Officer, and Head of Operational Risk at CLSA, an Asia Pacific based Financial Services firm. He has also had roles at PwC, EY, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank. He is a Chartered Accountant (ICAEW), has a BA in Political Science from the University of Leicester, an Executive MSc in Behavioural Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and is a member of the Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists (GAABS). To exercise his social muscle he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) and to exercise his physical muscle he is one of only 350 members of the 4 Deserts Club and will still occasionally run in inhospitable places. In addition to founding behavOR David is the UK MD of Swarm Dynamics, who use an innovative blend of behavioural science and AI to automatically gain insight, measure and predict organizational behaviour. David also works with other specialist firms to augment their capabilities and to learn from leading industry experts. This includes BR Insights, a behavioural risk consultancy, who through the application of behavioural science, help organisations achieve better outcomes and prevent foreseeable problems for their business, employees, customers and society.
behavOR - what's in a name?

We could give an explanation of how behavOR represents the imperative to embed behavioural expertise in Operational Risk and Operational Resilience. OR, given the importance of recognizing environmental drivers of behaviour, how we have eliminated the personal emphasis on the I and the You. OR, the way it removes any conflict between those who spell behaviour with a U and those Americans who incorrectly spell it without a U. OR, how was it the only name left after all the best behavioural options had already been taken by other organizations. OR, perhaps, like good art, it can be viewed from different perspectives, allowing people to engage with their own interpretation.
